Community Assistance - Fernie, BC

Fernie BC

Elk Valley Stewardship Society

The Chinook Institute assisted and supported the organizational development of the Elk Valley Stewardship Society – a community-based organization in Fernie that aims to be a resource centre and program provider supporting stewardship initiatives in the Elk Valley, BC. EVSC was successful in its initial fundraising and project development, and formally established itself as a BC society. Chinook Institute and EVSC partnered to deliver two successful pilot workshops of the Open Space Toolkit for Southeastern BC in Fernie in May/June, 2006. The workshops were attended by local elected officials, Calgary and Fernie-based developers, conservationists, local landowners and interested citizens.

Elk Valley Stewardship Atlas

In 2003-2004, Chinook Institute assisted the East Kootenay Environmental Society in developing the Elk Valley Stewardship Atlas project, with the aim of gathering information on ecological, economic, cultural and social land uses/values to inform local and regional planning processes, and increase public awareness. CI facilitated two local workshops in conjunction with EKES (Fernie) and the BC Community Mapping Network.
